Land Acknowledgement

Honoring those that came before and served as traditional stewards of the land is vital to acknowledging the long standing history of Southwest Washington. This area is home to the Cowlitz and Chinook Indian Tribes. The lands and rivers enabled them to flourish with rich resources. Today, we must appreciate the persistence of the Cowlitz and Chinook People and the importance they play in our region. It's also important to support the Chinook in their effort to gain federal government recognition. To learn more about local tribes, read Chinookan Peoples of the Lower Columbia by Robert T. Boyd, Kenneth M. Ames, and Tony A. Johnson.
